A pattern on screen is not yet a product. To become wallpaper, fabric or a printed panel it has to reduce to a repeat tile - one small unit a press can stamp across any area with no visible seam. Islamic geometry is unusually good at this, for a reason worth understanding.
A seamless repeat tile is a single unit of a pattern whose opposite edges match exactly, so that copies laid edge to edge in a grid join invisibly. It is the smallest thing a manufacturer needs. Hand a wallpaper or textile press one seamless tile plus a repeat size, and it can cover a wall or a bolt of cloth without ever showing a join. Get the tile wrong - by a single pixel or a hairline of geometry - and the seam marches across the finished surface in a diagonal line you cannot unsee.
What makes a tile actually tile
The rule is simple to state: whatever leaves the right edge must arrive at the left edge, and whatever leaves the top must arrive at the bottom. Every line that crosses a boundary has to continue precisely where its opposite boundary picks up. For a photograph, forcing this is a fight - retouchers clone and blur the edges to fake continuity, and it is never quite perfect. For a constructed geometric pattern, it comes free, because the pattern was built to repeat in the first place.
Why geometric patterns repeat perfectly
An Islamic geometric pattern is laid out on a lattice - a regular grid of square, hexagonal or rhombic cells - and the whole design is one fundamental unit stamped across that grid. That means a translational repeat is not something you extract after the fact; it is present in the geometry from the first compass arc. Repeat size and true scale
A seamless tile is only half the brief; the other half is how big the repeat is in the real world. A 150 mm repeat and a 600 mm repeat of the same tile are completely different products on a wall. This is why the studio's room preview is calibrated to physical scale: set a 300 mm repeat and you see a 300 mm repeat previewed at true size, so what you approve on screen is what arrives from the printer. When you brief a manufacturer, the two numbers that matter most are the tile artwork and the repeat dimension - state both.
SVG or raster?
For the tile itself, prefer SVG wherever the production process accepts it. Because SVG is vector, a single small tile scales to any size with perfectly crisp edges and a tiny file - ideal for large-format wallpaper, vinyl and laser cutting, where a raster would either blur or balloon to gigabytes. Reach for a high-resolution raster (PNG or TIFF) only when a print-on-demand service demands pixels; then export at the finished repeat size and the print's resolution, typically 150–300 DPI.
